The beekeeping inspection

Text: an original contemporary personal account-style practice extract.

On my first morning helping to inspect beehives, I was nervous about moving slowly enough. My mentor checked that my veil was secure and showed me where to stand while each hive was opened. I expected the bees to distract me, but following the same careful routine at every hive soon felt natural.

The arrangement of the inspection made the work easier. Each hive lid carried a removable number matching the record sheet, so we could not confuse one colony’s notes with another’s. My partner wrote down my observations while I kept my gloves on, which meant I did not have to balance a pencil near the open hive. By lunchtime, I was concentrating on what I could see rather than on the equipment in my hands.
