The initials beneath the table

Text: an original contemporary workplace-feature-style practice extract.

At the furniture workshop, the manager placed a pencil beside the finishing bench and asked each worker to add their initials beneath every piece of furniture they completed. The mark was no wider than a thumb and would face the floor in its new home. Arun, who had worked there for twenty years, called it "a signature nobody wants to see". Leila, an apprentice, disliked it for the opposite reason: she did not yet feel entitled to sign anything.

At the end of that week, Leila initialled a dining table, stepped away and noticed that one section caught the light differently. She brought it back from the loading area and sanded the surface again. Signing had not improved her practical skill, but it had interrupted the moment when she usually decided that the work was finished. On another afternoon, initials beneath a returned bench led the delivery team straight to Arun. He pointed out that its top had been replaced after he had built the frame. The pencil could identify a person more easily than it could identify a cause.

The difficulty became clearer when a table came back with a narrow split. "Whose initials are these?" was asked before anyone asked what had happened. Three people had selected, cut and finished the timber, yet one name appeared underneath. The manager has not withdrawn the rule. A month later, some tables carry one set of initials and others carry a row of three, as workers interpret responsibility differently. The marks remain hidden and small. The argument about what they mean now occupies half of the Friday meeting.

In this extract, the writer tries to show that a simple attempt to make work more accountable can both sharpen care and oversimplify responsibility.

Evaluate how successfully this is achieved. Support your views with detailed reference to the extract.
