The soap wrapper
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
Jonas cut a square of paper from the roll and placed the bar of soap in its centre. The shop bell rang before he had folded the corners. He set the unfinished parcel on the highest shelf behind the counter, beyond the damp mark left by a customer’s umbrella. When the visitor asked for candles, Jonas reached for the wooden box beneath the scales. The paper waited above him, one loose corner lifting whenever the door opened.
Identify where Jonas places the unfinished parcel.
