Question 124

The music lesson

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The tutor stopped playing and asked Daniel to try the passage again. Daniel began loudly, determined to prove that he understood. Halfway through, his fingers tangled over the same notes. The tutor said nothing. His silence was more difficult to bear than any criticism. Daniel lowered his hands, admitted that he had not practised and waited. This time, the tutor moved the stool closer and began with the first difficult bar.

Identify the sentence which suggests that Daniel finds the tutor’s lack of comment uncomfortable.
