The lantern maker’s counter
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
Clara placed the carriage lantern on the counter, and Mr Elwood examined its loose door and cracked glass. He drew the broken pane from its grooves and slid a new pane securely into the empty frame. Next, he took out the worn hinge pin and fitted a straight iron pin in its place, allowing the little door to close firmly once more. After checking his work, he wrapped the lantern and returned it to her.
Give two ways in which Mr Elwood restores the damaged carriage lantern.
