Question 13

The open cage

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The keeper had told Miriam that the kestrel was strong enough to leave. At noon, she carried the cage into the meadow and fitted the iron key into its lock. The door required only a quarter-turn, yet she paused to rub a speck of dust from the keyhole with her sleeve.

Inside, the kestrel shifted along its perch. Its claws made a dry scratching sound against the wood. Beyond the wire, the meadow shone beneath a wide, empty sky. Miriam turned the key halfway, then turned it back again. Not yet.

The bird opened its wings. Their barred shadow trembled across Miriam’s dress, and the tips of the feathers struck the sides of the cage. For an instant, she saw not the small creature she had fed each morning, but a bird measuring a space that had become too narrow.

Miriam opened the door. The kestrel remained still before springing past her into the sunlight. She watched until it was no more than a dark stitch in the blue. Only then did her fist unfold, the key lying warm and harmless on her palm.

Analyse the writer’s presentation of Miriam’s hesitation about releasing the kestrel, considering both language and structure. Support your answer with references to the passage.
