Question 39

After the verdict

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The foreman announced that Stephen was not guilty, and voices rose throughout the crowded courtroom. Daniel had prayed for those words throughout the trial. Relief for his brother was accompanied by a sudden fear of whoever had truly committed the crime. While Stephen’s friends hurried towards him, Daniel remained seated and watched the strangers leave through the doors.

Identify the sentence which shows that Daniel has mixed feelings about the verdict.
