Jonah, the boat-builder's youngest apprentice, kept beside the brake lever as the crew climbed aboard. > All winter, Jonah had helped to clean the cradle and grease its wheels. He now saw that the bow rope had fallen between the spokes of the right-hand wheel before passing around an iron post. He called to the coxswain, but the wind carried away the first warning. When he shouted again, one of the crew told him that frightened boys should stand clear.
