5.2.1 Reading source: literature fiction text

Reading source: literature fiction text: what the requirement means

  1. Specification focus. The source for the reading questions will be a literature fiction text. It will be drawn from either the 20th or 21st century. Its genre will be prose fiction.
  2. Why it matters. The skill is assessed through the quality of the response, not through a memorised label. Examiners reward choices that are accurate, relevant and clearly connected to meaning, purpose or audience.
Key Idea
  • Treat 'Reading source: literature fiction text' as an action you must demonstrate. Build every point or choice around the exact demand of the task.

Reading source: literature fiction text: a reliable method

  1. Read for orientation. Establish who communicates, what happens or is argued, and the text's overall purpose before focusing on details.
  2. Separate explicit and implicit meaning. Record what the text states directly, then infer what attitudes, motives or consequences are suggested.
  3. Select precise evidence. Use the smallest quotation or reference that proves the point. Keep evidence relevant to the exact wording of the question.
  4. Explain and verify. Show how the evidence supports the interpretation and check it against the surrounding passage so that the inference remains defensible.

Reading source: literature fiction text: worked application

  1. Model the thinking. If a narrator says little but repeatedly notices exits and watches other people, the explicit details concern setting and observation; the defensible inference may be anxiety, caution or a desire to escape.
  2. Develop rather than list. One developed example normally shows greater control than several labels. Explain the relationship between choice, evidence and effect.
Exam technique
  • For AQA GCSE English Language, follow the command word and source boundaries exactly. Use the mark allocation to control time, and leave a short final check for relevance and technical accuracy.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid formulaic responses that ignore the task. A method is useful only when it helps you make a precise, supported and relevant choice.
Self review
  • Can I explain reading source: literature fiction text in my own words?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or crafted choices rather than general comments?
  • Can I identify one common mistake and correct it?

The reading source is a prose fiction text from the 20th or 21st century. Your response is assessed through the quality of your reading, not through repeating a memorised label.

For every answer, follow the exact task. Make choices that are accurate, relevant and clearly connected to meaning, purpose or audience.

A strong response usually links three things: a precise choice from the text, carefully selected evidence, and an explanation of what that evidence suggests.
