A student carried out a titration to find the exact volume of dilute nitric acid needed to neutralise 20.0 cm3 of sodium hydroxide solution.

The steps of the titration method are shown below, but they are not in the correct order.

  • step P: fill a burette with the dilute nitric acid and record the initial reading
  • step Q: use a volumetric pipette to measure 20.0 cm3 of the sodium hydroxide solution
  • step R: run the dilute nitric acid from the burette into the conical flask, swirling continuously, until the indicator changes colour
  • step S: transfer the measured sodium hydroxide solution into a clean conical flask and add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator
  • step T: record the final reading on the burette and calculate the volume of dilute nitric acid added
