The four state symbols

When you write a chemical equation, balancing the atoms is only half the story. To give a complete picture of a reaction, you also need to state what form each chemical takes. We do this by writing a small letter (or two) in brackets immediately after the chemical formula.

These are called state symbols, and there are exactly four that you need to know for your GCSE:

  • (s) means solid. The particles are packed tightly together in a regular arrangement.
  • (l) means liquid. The particles are still touching, but can flow and move past one another freely.
  • (g) means gas. The particles are spread far apart and move around quickly in all directions.
  • (aq) means aqueous. This tells us that the substance is dissolved in water.

Definition

Aqueous

The word aqueous comes from aqua (the Latin word for water). An aqueous solution is simply a mixture where a solid, liquid, or gas has been fully dissolved in water.

The tricky one: Liquid (l) vs Aqueous (aq)

The single biggest slip-up students make with state symbols is confusing (l) and (aq).

If a chemical has the symbol (l), it means it is a pure liquid. There is nothing else mixed with it. At room temperature, water is a pure liquid, so we write H2O(l)\text{H}_2\text{O(l)}H2​O(l). Mercury and bromine are also pure liquids at room temperature. If you take a solid metal or an ionic compound and heat it until it melts, it also becomes a pure liquid (a "molten" substance), so it gets an (l).

If a chemical has the symbol (aq), it means it is a mixture. You have taken your chemical (the solute) and dissolved it in water (the solvent). For example, solid table salt is NaCl(s)\text{NaCl(s)}NaCl(s). If you stir that salt into a beaker of water until it disappears, you have made a salt solution, which we write as NaCl(aq)\text{NaCl(aq)}NaCl(aq).

Common Mistake

Acids are (aq), not (l)

Many students assume that because an acid pours like a liquid, it gets the (l) symbol. In fact, laboratory acids like hydrochloric acid (HCl\text{HCl}HCl) or sulfuric acid (H2SO4\text{H}_2\text{SO}_4H2​SO4​) are gases or heavy syrups that have been dissolved in water. Because they are dissolved in water, acids in your equations should always be given the (aq) symbol.

How to figure out the right state symbol

In an exam, you will often be asked to add state symbols to an equation. You don't have to guess; you can usually work them out from the clues in the text or your general chemistry knowledge:

  • Metals: Almost all metals are solid at room temperature, so they get an (s). The only exception you are likely to see is mercury, which is (l).
  • Acids and Alkalis: Unless the question specifically mentions a solid or gas, standard acids and alkalis in reactions are dissolved in water, so they are (aq).
  • Precipitates: If a question mentions that a "precipitate" forms when two solutions are mixed, it means an insoluble solid has been created. The precipitate gets an (s).
  • Diatomic non-metals: Elements like oxygen (O2\text{O}_2O2​), nitrogen (N2\text{N}_2N2​), chlorine (Cl2\text{Cl}_2Cl2​), and hydrogen (H2\text{H}_2H2​) are gases at room temperature, so they get a (g).
  • "Solutions": If a substance is described as a solution, it gets an (aq).

Let's look at how to apply these rules to a full reaction.

Example

Assigning state symbols to an equation

Solid magnesium is added to a beaker of dilute hydrochloric acid. A reaction takes place, producing a solution of magnesium chloride and bubbles of hydrogen gas.

Write the balanced chemical equation with state symbols.

  1. Write out the balanced formulas first. Read the question to find the reactants and products. Magnesium (Mg\text{Mg}Mg) reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl\text{HCl}HCl) to make magnesium chloride (MgCl2\text{MgCl}_2MgCl2​) and hydrogen (H2\text{H}_2H2​). Mg+2HCl→MgCl2+H2\text{Mg} + 2\text{HCl} \rightarrow \text{MgCl}_2 + \text{H}_2Mg+2HCl→MgCl2​+H2​
  2. Assign a state to the magnesium. The question specifically calls it "solid magnesium", and magnesium is a metal at room temperature. It gets an (s).
  3. Assign a state to the hydrochloric acid. It is described as "dilute", which means it has been mixed with lots of water. Acids are dissolved in water anyway. It gets an (aq).
  4. Assign a state to the magnesium chloride. The question tells you it forms a "solution". Solutions in GCSE chemistry are dissolved in water. It gets an (aq).
  5. Assign a state to the hydrogen. The question mentions "bubbles" and "gas". Hydrogen is a gas at room temperature. It gets a (g).
  6. Combine into the final equation. Add the symbols in brackets right next to each formula. Mg(s)+2HCl(aq)→MgCl2(aq)+H2(g)\text{Mg(s)} + 2\text{HCl(aq)} \rightarrow \text{MgCl}_2\text{(aq)} + \text{H}_2\text{(g)}Mg(s)+2HCl(aq)→MgCl2​(aq)+H2​(g)
Tip

Water as a product

When water is formed in a standard room-temperature reaction (like a neutralization reaction between an acid and an alkali), it is formed as a pure liquid. Therefore, it always gets the symbol (l), not (aq).

Exam technique

In the exam

  1. Read the instructions carefully. Only add state symbols if the question explicitly asks you to: "Include state symbols in your answer". If it doesn't ask, you won't gain extra marks for including them, but you could lose a mark if you write them down incorrectly!
  2. Scan the text for clues. Examiners often hide the answers in the wording. Look for keywords like "solution", "powder", "molten", "precipitate", or "bubbles".
  3. Don't leave blanks. If a 3-mark equation question asks for state symbols, at least one of those marks is purely for getting the symbols right. Even if you can't remember the formula for a complex product, you can often guess its state symbol from the text clues and still pick up the mark.
