3.2.5b Relating mass, volume and concentration

Concentration, solute mass and volume are tied together

Definition

Concentration

The mass of solute present per unit volume of solution, usually measured in g/dm3\text{g}/\text{dm}^3g/dm3 for this calculation.

  1. The three quantities are linked by c=mVc = \dfrac{m}{V}c=Vm, so knowing any two lets you find the third.
  2. Concentration ccc is in g/dm3\text{g}/\text{dm}^3g/dm3, mass mmm is in grams and volume VVV is in dm3\text{dm}^3dm3.
Key Idea

Concentration goes up when you add solute and goes down when you add solvent, because it is a mass shared over a volume.

More solute raises the concentration

Definition

Solute

The substance dissolved in a solvent to form a solution.

  1. At a fixed volume, concentration is directly proportional to the mass of solute.
  2. Doubling the mass of solute in the same volume doubles the concentration.
Example

Going from 10 g10\ \text{g}10 g to 20 g20\ \text{g}20 g of solute in 1 dm31\ \text{dm}^31 dm3 raises the concentration from 101010 to 20 g/dm320\ \text{g}/\text{dm}^320 g/dm3.

A larger volume lowers the concentration

Definition

Solution

A mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.

  1. At a fixed mass of solute, concentration is inversely proportional to the volume of solution.
  2. Adding more solvent dilutes the solution, so the same solute spread through a bigger volume gives a lower concentration.
Exam technique
  • When asked to explain a change, name which quantity you kept fixed and which you changed.
  • Check the volume is in dm3\text{dm}^3dm3 before rearranging, or the mass or volume you find will be wrong by a factor of a thousand.

Rearranging to find a mass or a volume

  1. To find a mass of solute, use m=c×Vm = c \times Vm=c×V.
    1. In 200 cm3200\ \text{cm}^3200 cm3 (0.2 dm30.2\ \text{dm}^30.2 dm3) of a 15 g/dm315\ \text{g}/\text{dm}^315 g/dm3 solution, the mass of solute is 15×0.2=3 g15 \times 0.2 = 3\ \text{g}15×0.2=3 g.
  2. To find a volume, use V=mcV = \dfrac{m}{c}V=cm.
    1. A 25 g/dm325\ \text{g}/\text{dm}^325 g/dm3 solution holds 10 g10\ \text{g}10 g of solute in 1025=0.4 dm3\dfrac{10}{25} = 0.4\ \text{dm}^32510=0.4 dm3, which is 400 cm3400\ \text{cm}^3400 cm3.
Self review
  • How does increasing the mass of solute change the concentration at fixed volume?
  • Why does diluting a solution with water lower its concentration?
  • What mass of solute is in 100 cm3100\ \text{cm}^3100 cm3 of a 30 g/dm330\ \text{g}/\text{dm}^330 g/dm3 solution?
  • What volume of a 50 g/dm350\ \text{g}/\text{dm}^350 g/dm3 solution contains 20 g20\ \text{g}20 g of solute?

Concentration tells you the mass of solute in each unit volume of solution. The relationship is c=mVc = \dfrac{m}{V}c=Vm, where mmm is solute mass and VVV is solution volume.

For these calculations, use mmm in g\text{g}g and VVV in dm3\text{dm}^3dm3. Your concentration will then be in g/dm3\text{g}/\text{dm}^3g/dm3.
