Propane is an alkane and propene is an alkene. Figure 1 shows the displayed structural formulae of propane and propene. A diagram showing the displayed structural formulae of propane and propene. Propane, on the left, has three carbon atoms in a horizontal chain with single covalent bonds between them (C-C-C). Each carbon atom is bonded to hydrogen atoms to satisfy its tetravalency (three hydrogens on each outer carbon, and two on the central carbon), forming C-H single bonds. Propene, on the right, also has a chain of three carbon atoms but features a double covalent bond between two of the carbons (C=C-C). The carbon atoms are bonded to six hydrogen atoms in total: two on the left double-bonded carbon, one on the middle carbon, and three on the right single-bonded carbon. Compare propane with propene.
