Question 96

A chemist carries out two complete polymerisation reactions using 200 g of monomers in each reaction.

Reaction 1 is addition polymerisation. Reaction 2 is condensation polymerisation.

All the monomers react. The polymer is then separated from any other product. The mass of polymer from Reaction 1 is 200 g, but the mass of polymer from Reaction 2 is less than 200 g.

Explain the difference between the masses of polymer produced in the two reactions.
