Question 2

A student uses a respirometer to investigate the rate of aerobic respiration in germinating mung beans at a constant temperature.

a.

The student recorded the following distances moved by the colored liquid drop in one minute when the experiment was conducted in a water bath at 25∘C25^\circ\text{C}25∘C:

  • Trial 1: 72 mm72\text{ mm}72 mm
  • Trial 2: 78 mm78\text{ mm}78 mm
  • Trial 3: 75 mm75\text{ mm}75 mm

Explain why the student represented this set of results as 75±3 mm75 \pm 3\text{ mm}75±3 mm.

[2]
b.

At this temperature, the mean distance the liquid drop moved in one minute was 75 mm75\text{ mm}75 mm. The diameter of the narrow capillary tube in the respirometer is 0.8 mm0.8\text{ mm}0.8 mm.

Calculate the volume of oxygen taken up by the germinating mung beans in one minute. Use the equation:

Volume=πr2l \text{Volume} = \pi r^2 l Volume=πr2l

where rrr is the radius of the tube, lll is the distance the drop moves, and π=3.14\pi = 3.14π=3.14.

Give your answer to 2 significant figures.
