Scientists can now take skin cells from a patient and change them into stem cells. These stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell, in the same way as embryonic stem cells.
The scientists then make the stem cells differentiate into nerve cells. The nerve cells are used to treat a patient with Parkinson's disease.
Suggest two advantages of using these stem cells rather than embryonic stem cells to treat the patient.
Explain why there is still a risk to the patient when these stem cells are used.
Explain why the stem cells are made to differentiate into nerve cells before they are put into the patient's brain.
46 exam-style questions on Edexcel GCSE Biology 2.2 Stem cells, covering 2.2.1 Function of stem cells and meristems and 2.2.2 Benefits and risks of stem cells. Each one has a worked solution and a mark scheme showing where the marks go.
