A gardener took 80 cuttings from geranium plants. Each cutting was a short piece of stem with two leaves.
All the cuttings were placed in pots of compost. After 4 weeks the gardener counted how many cuttings had grown into new plants.
The Table shows the results.
Table
| Type of cutting | Number of cuttings | Number of cuttings that grew into new plants |
|---|---|---|
| shoot tip included | 40 | 34 |
| shoot tip removed | 40 | 12 |
Calculate the percentage of cuttings with the shoot tip included that grew into new plants.
Explain the difference in the results for the two types of cutting.
Give one variable the gardener should control in this investigation.
The new plants are genetically identical to the parent plant.
