What extinction is

Definition

Extinction

The permanent loss of all members of a species, so that none remain alive anywhere.

  1. Extinction is the permanent loss of all members of a species, so none are left alive anywhere.
  2. A species becomes extinct when it cannot survive or reproduce fast enough to cope with the changes it faces.
  3. Once a species is extinct it cannot return, so its alleles are lost for good.
Example

The dodo became extinct after humans, and the animals they brought with them, hunted it and destroyed its habitat.

The causes of extinction

  1. New predators can kill so many of a species that it cannot recover.
  2. New diseases can spread through and wipe out a species.
  3. New or more successful competitors can take the food or space the species needs.
  4. Environmental change, such as a changing climate, can make the habitat unsuitable.
  5. Habitat destruction, often by humans, removes the place a species needs to live.
  6. A single catastrophic event, such as a huge volcanic eruption or an asteroid strike, can cause a mass extinction.
Note

Most causes come down to the environment changing faster than the species can adapt.

Extinction is the permanent loss of all members of a species. A species is extinct when none of its members remain alive anywhere in the world.

A species may become extinct when environmental changes cause its death rate to exceed its reproductive rate and the population falls to zero. Over generations, natural selection can change a population if heritable variation allows some individuals to survive and reproduce more successfully, but extinction can occur if the population cannot evolve quickly enough or recover. Once the species is extinct, its gene pool, including any alleles unique to it, is lost.
