The classic study by Rosenhan (1973) investigated the classification of mental illness. In the initial study, eight pseudo-patients telephoned 12 psychiatric hospitals for an appointment, complaining of hearing voices of the same sex saying the words 'empty', 'hollow', and 'thud'. Every pseudo-patient was admitted, and 11 of the 12 admissions resulted in a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
