Encouraging sustainable household practices is key to reducing landfill waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. However, researchers need to understand how local infrastructure and residential settings influence these practices. To investigate this, an environmental psychologist conducted a survey using a self-report questionnaire to gather data about people's waste disposal habits and perceived barriers to recycling. Some of the data collected is presented in the tables below.
Table 1: Responses to owning a home compost bin
| Do you own a home compost bin? | |
|---|---|
| 'yes' | 'no' |
| 120 | 80 |
Table 2: Responses to active composting of food waste by household location
| Do you actively compost food waste? | ||
|---|---|---|
| 'yes' | 'no' | |
| Urban residents | 34 | 56 |
| Rural residents | 62 | 28 |
Table 3: Primary barrier to composting reported by participants
| Primary Barrier | Number of people |
|---|---|
| Lack of space | 45 |
| Odor concerns | 30 |
| Pests/Vermin | 55 |
| Lack of knowledge | 25 |
| No local collection | 45 |
