An environmental psychologist investigated whether playing ambient classical music in virtual reality (VR) driving simulators would reduce the frequency of simulated aggressive driving actions (such as tailgating or excessive honking). Ten participants were recruited using a volunteer sample. In the first session, participants completed a 20-minute drive with no background music. In the second session, the same participants completed the same drive with background classical music playing. The number of aggressive driving actions recorded for each participant is shown in the table below.
| Participant | Number of aggressive driving actions | |
|---|---|---|
| Without background music | With background classical music | |
| A | 19 | 14 |
| B | 12 | 8 |
| C | 16 | 11 |
| D | 9 | 5 |
| E | 18 | 12 |
| F | 22 | 17 |
| G | 13 | 9 |
| H | 11 | 6 |
| I | 20 | 15 |
| J | 15 | 10 |
