Question 13

Marcus carried out an experiment to investigate the effectiveness of a new mindfulness mobile application designed to reduce nicotine cravings in e-cigarette users.

He selected e-cigarette users from students who happened to be present in the university library lobby on a Tuesday afternoon.

He compared two groups of participants:

  • Condition A: E-cigarette users who did not use the mindfulness application.
  • Condition B: E-cigarette users who used the mindfulness application whenever they felt an urge to vape.

Marcus then asked all participants to rate the overall intensity of their nicotine cravings over a 24-hour period. A score of 10 represented 'extremely high craving intensity' and a score of 0 represented 'no cravings at all'.

Explain one strength and one limitation of the sampling technique used by Marcus in this study.
