A researcher placed an announcement in a large corporate office newsletter asking for remote-hybrid marketing employees to participate in a study on daily work productivity.
Each employee wore a smart ambient light sensor badge at their home desks for a ten-day period. Each afternoon, they were asked to open a workspace app to view their environmental light-quality data on their smartphones. The employees were unaware that the light-quality data shown on their phones was systematically manipulated by the researcher. Over the ten days, each employee saw that they had worked in "suboptimal lighting conditions" for five random days, and "optimal lighting conditions" for the other five days.
Every evening, after viewing their daily data, each employee completed a brief digital questionnaire. One of the questions asked participants to rate how focused they felt during their afternoon tasks on a scale from 1–10. Apart from this, employees were asked to go about their normal working routines.
