A researcher recruited university students to participate in a 10-day study disguised as an investigation into everyday cognitive stamina.
Each day, participants completed a brief online logical reasoning task. After completing the task, they were presented with feedback on their screen. Unbeknown to the participants, this feedback was manipulated by the researcher. On 5 random days, the feedback screen stated they had performed 'Above Average (Top 25%)', and on the other 5 days, it stated they had performed 'Below Average (Bottom 25%)'.
Immediately after seeing this feedback, participants completed a single-item questionnaire rating their motivation to complete the next day's task on a scale from 1 (extremely low) to 10 (extremely high).
