Study Description: Ergonomic Seating and Back Discomfort

An occupational health researcher wanted to investigate whether using an ergonomic office chair designed to support the lumbar spine would reduce lower back discomfort in remote software developers who work sitting down for at least 8 hours a day.

The researcher used a repeated measures design with a sample of 30 remote developers.

  • For Condition A, developers spent two weeks working while sitting on the newly designed ergonomic chair.
  • For Condition B, developers spent two weeks working while sitting on a standard wooden kitchen dining chair.

At the end of each two-week condition, participants were emailed a link to self-report their average daily lower back discomfort over that period on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 indicated completely pain-free and 10 indicated extreme discomfort.
