Researchers conducted a naturalistic observation to compare the cooperative play behaviours of Year 1 primary school children (aged 5–6 years). The study compared children who regularly registered for an extracurricular drama club with those who did not. The sample consisted of 60 children in total (30 in the drama club group, 30 in the comparison group).
The observation took place in the school playground during morning recess. The children were observed covertly by two trained observers from a discrete distance while they interacted freely with playground equipment and peers.
To ensure consistent and objective recording, the observers used a structured observation sheet.
