Study Description

A researcher investigated the effect of social support on conformity rates.

  • Condition A (No social support): Six confederates gave the same incorrect answer to an unambiguous perceptual task before the participant responded.
  • Condition B (With social support): Five confederates gave the same incorrect answer, but one confederate gave the correct answer before the participant responded.

A total of 40 participants were recruited. Each participant took part in either Condition A or Condition B. They were not matched in any way. The researcher recorded whether each participant conformed to the majority.
