A researcher noticed age-related differences in the prosocial sharing behaviors of young children. They designed an observational study to investigate the differences in voluntary sharing choices between 4-year-old and 6-year-old children.
The researcher carried out the study using children recruited from two local primary schools. There were 40 children in each age group at School A, and 20 children in each age group at School B. The researcher used stratified sampling across the schools to select twelve 4-year-olds and twelve 6-year-olds to take part in the study.
Each child was observed individually for 20 minutes during free-play time in a dedicated school room equipped with a limited set of shared resources, including colored master markers, building bricks, and a sticker book. The researcher recorded the frequency and duration of cooperative sharing behaviors. All parents provided informed consent for their children to take part.
