Study Description

An educational psychologist wanted to investigate whether problem-solving ability is affected by the ambient room temperature of an examination room.

The psychologist recruited a stratified sample of 30 students. She obtained the sample from a university department consisting of 120 undergraduate students and 80 postgraduate students.

All participants were asked to complete a series of standard logic puzzles individually in a dedicated testing room.

There were two conditions in the study, Condition 1 and Condition 2.

  • Condition 1: 15 participants completed the puzzles in a room where the temperature was maintained at a comfortable 21°C.
  • Condition 2: The other 15 participants completed the puzzles in a room where the temperature was maintained at a warm 32°C.

Each participant had exactly 15 minutes to complete the tasks. The psychologist collected the puzzle sheets and recorded the number of logic puzzles correctly solved by each participant.
