A neuroscientist investigates the efficacy of two distinct cognitive rehabilitation programs for patients recovering from localized traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Program Alpha requires patients to engage in a 6-week course of gamified digital cognitive exercises, while Program Beta requires a matched sample of patients to engage in a 6-week course of structured therapist-led physical cognitive tasks. All participants are female, aged between 45 and 50, who sustained their injury within the last 3 months.
At the beginning and end of the 6-week programs, each patient’s cognitive processing speed is assessed using a clinical computerised test, yielding a score out of 100, where a higher score indicates faster processing.
State one reason why using a matched pairs design in this study is an improvement on using an independent groups design.
