The psychologist decided to conduct an experiment to investigate the effects of consuming high-sugar energy drinks before evening study sessions on sleep onset latency (time taken to fall asleep).
A volunteer sample of 40 college students consented to take part in the experiment.
The 40 students were randomly split into two groups. Group A consumed a high-sugar energy drink 1 hour before their evening study session each night for the first week, then a sugar-free flavored water before studying each night for the second week. Group B consumed the sugar-free flavored water in the first week and the high-sugar energy drink in the second week.
When the students woke up each morning, they received a text message asking if they took longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep the previous night. They completed a quick reply of 'yes' or 'no'.
