Researchers were interested in elderly people's participation in local community social clubs. They asked participants to write weekly journal entries over a month about their experiences. In their journals, the participants were asked to reflect on how often they attended the clubs, the types of activities they participated in, and their feelings of social connection.
There were 60 participants in the study: fifteen elderly individuals aged 70–80 years from each of four different community centers in the Greater Manchester area. There were equal numbers of men and women.
Before the study began, the researchers devised a set of categories to be used to analyse the journal entries. These included the following categories: frequency of attendance; type of physical activity; expressions of emotional well-being.
Outline how the reliability of the analysis of the elderly participants' journal entries could be checked.
