A researcher wanted to investigate whether working memory performance is affected by the ambient temperature of the testing room.
The researcher recruited a stratified sample of 30 students from a college sixth form consisting of 120 Year 12 students and 180 Year 13 students.
Each participant was asked to memorize a list of 25 abstract nouns. They were given 3 minutes to study the list, followed by a 5-minute distractor task, after which they were asked to write down as many nouns as they could recover from memory.
There were two conditions in this independent groups design:
Each participant completed the study individually. The researcher recorded the number of nouns correctly recalled by each participant.
