An educational psychologist wanted to investigate careers advisers' views on differences in the way Key Stage 3 students (aged 11–14) and Key Stage 5 students (aged 16–18) seek advice about future employment. Previous research in this area showed inconsistent findings.
The psychologist randomly selected six secondary schools from a large local authority. Five of the six schools agreed to take part. The psychologist designed five questions and interviewed the primary careers advisers in the five participating schools, asking each adviser the same five questions in the same order.
