A researcher designed a study to test the effectiveness of different intervention programmes for adolescents experiencing social anxiety.
Forty-five adolescents, all diagnosed with high social anxiety, participated in the study. At the beginning of the study, the researcher recorded the number of self-reported weekly anxiety episodes experienced by each participant.
The 45 adolescents were then randomly allocated to three equal groups of 15.
At the end of the 8-week period, the researcher again recorded the number of weekly anxiety episodes experienced by each participant. The results showed that the average number of weekly anxiety episodes for Group A and Group B had decreased significantly since the start of the study, whereas for Group C it remained unchanged.
