Research suggests that background noise affects cognitive performance. To test this, a researcher conducted an experiment using a repeated-measures design:

  • Condition 1: 25 participants read Text Passage A in a quiet room and completed a comprehension test.
  • Condition 2: The same 25 participants read Text Passage B in a room with loud background noise and completed a comprehension test.

The two text passages were chosen arbitrarily and were not standardized.

Explain how the text passages used in Condition 1 and Condition 2 should be matched in order to improve the validity of the study.
