A sports scientist investigates whether a new compression garment design improves physiological recovery rate (measured by blood lactate clearance in mmol/L\text{mmol/L}mmol/L) after a high-intensity run.
To control for individual variations in aerobic fitness and metabolic rate, 40 participants are tested for their VO2 max\text{VO}_2\text{ max}VO2 max and age. They are then sorted into 20 pairs of highly similar profiles. For each pair, a coin is tossed to determine which participant wears the active compression garment during recovery (Condition A) and which participant wears a standard athletic garment (Condition B).
