A researcher believed that there is a physiological basis to generalized anxiety. She predicted that there would be a significant difference in resting heart rates (measured in beats per minute) between individuals diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and individuals with no history of anxiety disorders. In order to test her prediction, the researcher used digital monitors to record the resting heart rates of 15 participants in each group and statistically analysed the data.
