A team of occupational psychologists designed an experiment to test the effects of background sound on professional proofreading performance. They recruited a sample of 40 highly experienced, professional proofreaders from academic publishing houses. Each participant was asked to complete two proofreading tests on a computer monitor. Both tests involved scanning a 500-word academic text and clicking on spelling and grammatical errors as quickly as possible.
