A researcher investigating treatments for Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) compares two interventions. Intervention X requires clients to participate in a 12-week course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Intervention Y requires a matched sample of clients to participate in a 12-week course of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The clients are all males who are 30 years old.
At the start and end of the 12-week courses, each client completes an 'anxiety management' questionnaire, generating a score out of 50, where a higher score indicates better anxiety management.
How is using a matched pairs design in this study an improvement on using an independent groups design?
