A team of cognitive psychologists designed an experiment to test the effects of auditory distractions on medical trainees' visual monitoring performance. They recruited a sample of 40 medical students and asked them to complete two computer-based patient-monitoring simulations. Both simulations involved watching a five-minute video of an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor screen. Participants were instructed to press the spacebar on the keyboard as quickly as possible whenever they spotted an abnormal cardiac waveform (such as an extra stroke or rhythm abnormality).
