Condition 1: 24 gardeners grew a clone of the heritage tomato plant using a 5% dilution of the seaweed-based fertiliser, recording the total mass in grams of tomatoes harvested per plant over a 6-week period.
Condition 2: The same 24 gardeners grew an identical clone of the heritage tomato plant using only tap water (0% fertiliser), recording the total mass in grams of tomatoes harvested per plant over the same 6-week period.
The experiment was conducted in identical greenhouse chambers to control for environmental factors.
