A psychology student carried out a laboratory experiment to investigate encoding in Long-Term Memory (LTM). She used a sample of 24 participants.

Two lists of 10 words were presented to participants.

  • List 1: large, huge, giant, vast, wide, broad, great, massive, immense, bulky (words with similar meanings / semantically similar).
  • List 2: pen, clock, cup, key, shoe, bird, leaf, road, dog, bag (words with different meanings / semantically dissimilar).

All 24 participants studied List 1, performed a 20-minute distractor task, and then tried to recall the words. The same procedure was repeated with List 2.
