Case Study: Leo

Leo is a 15-year-old boy who spent the first four years of his life in a series of temporary foster care placements.

Leo struggles to form close bonds with his permanent adoptive family and has very few peers at school. He has recently been excluded for aggressive behaviour and showed little remorse when questioned by teachers. His local authority support plan notes that his academic achievement and cognitive development are significantly below his chronological age.

Discuss Bowlby's theory of maternal deprivation. Refer to Leo in your answer.
