Question 2

Case Study: Maya

Maya recalls growing up in a home where her father was intensely security-conscious. Whenever Maya forgot to lock a door, her father would react with extreme panic and lock her in her room as a punishment. Now that Maya has started university and lives in shared student housing, she feels an overwhelming urge to check the front door lock exactly twelve times before leaving the house and before going to sleep. She lies awake at night terrified that intruders will break in.

Apart from cognitive explanations, outline one other possible explanation for Maya's behaviour.
