Question 2

Marcus comes from a family with a history of schizophrenia; both his mother and a maternal uncle have been diagnosed with the condition. Recently, Marcus has faced a series of highly stressful life events: he was involved in a serious car accident that ended his athletic career, and shortly after, he was made redundant from his role at an architecture firm. Although Marcus has never struggled with his mental health before, he has recently begun to experience symptoms of schizophrenia, including auditory hallucinations and delusions of persecution.

Using your knowledge of the diathesis-stress model, explain why Marcus is now showing symptoms of schizophrenia.
