Scenario

A team of cognitive psychologists investigated the effect of auditory environment on attention during a proofreading task.

Participants completed two similar proofreading trials under different conditions:

• Condition X: listening to loud ambient cafe noise.
• Condition Y: listening to classical music.

The psychologists measured:

• the number of typographical errors correctly identified (out of 50).
• the time taken to complete the passage, in minutes.

The study used a repeated measures design where the same 15 participants completed both conditions, with the order of conditions counterbalanced.

The mean scores for each of these measures are shown in Table 1.
