Question 13

A psychology student conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate the word length effect in working memory. She recruited a sample of 18 participants using opportunity sampling.

Two lists of words were presented on a computer screen one by one to all participants:

  • List 1: Five short, single-syllable words (book, pen, desk, cat, cup).
  • List 2: Five long, multi-syllable words (association, individual, vocabulary, refrigerator, university).

All 18 participants viewed and attempted to recall List 1, and then viewed and attempted to recall List 2.

Explain one advantage of using a laboratory experiment in this study.
