A software engineering research group investigated whether using an AI-assisted debugging tool affects the time taken by junior developers to locate and fix a set of standard bugs in a codebase.
An opportunity sample of 30 junior developers was recruited. The developers were randomly allocated to either the 'AI-assisted' condition or the 'traditional' condition, with 15 developers in each group.
In the 'AI-assisted' condition, developers used an IDE integrated with a generative AI assistant. In the 'traditional' condition, developers used the same IDE but with standard debugging tools only. All participants were given the same codebase containing three logical bugs and were timed to see how long (in minutes) it took them to resolve all three issues.
