What happens to the binomial expansion when nnn is not a non-negative integer?

For (1+2x)12(1+2x)^{\frac12}(1+2x)21​, the quadratic term is −12x2-\frac12x^2−21​x2 and the cubic term is 12x3\boxed{\frac12x^3}21​x3​.
